Another day, another new smartphone. Gionee has a new smartphone named Gionee M12 and it serves as the smaller version of M12 Pro that was unveiled some months ago. The Gionee M12 price in Nigeria is estimated to start from N70,000.
The Gionee M12 appears like a somewhat bigger version of the Gionee M12 Pro at first glance but that is not the case as the Pro version has a superior performance. Although, when the Gionee M12 is compared to the competition, it comes across as an average smartphone.
Interestingly, the device has two processor options: one comes with a Media Tek Helio A25 processor and another is fitted with a MediaTek Helio A22 SoC. So, this means that the prices for these two versions will depend on the processor.
The Gionee M12 features a 6.55-inch HD+ LCD screen with a resolution of 720 x 1600 pixels, an aspect ratio of 20:9, ~82.3% screen-to-body ratio, and ~268PPI pixel density. It doesn’t get FHD playback on platforms like Netflix and Amazon Prime. If watching movies on Netflix is your thing, then it’s necessary for you to get a device with better resolution.
The device sports a quad-camera configuration on the back which consists of a 48 MP (f/1.8) wide lens with PDAF, a 5 MP (f/2.2) ultra-wide lens with 115˚ field of view, and two 2 MP depth sensors. A punch-hole notch houses the 16 MP camera for selfies.
Like I said earlier, the devices will come in two processor-based variants: MediaTek Helio A25 (12 nm) and Mediatek Helio P22 (12 nm). Both SoCs will have 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage space, but another storage configuration will be available for the MediaTek A22 SoC i.e 4GB of RAM and 64 GB of internal storage. The internal storage can be expanded by an SD card.

The Gionee M12 is bundled with a 5,000mAh battery, although some of its competitors have pushed on to larger 6,000mAh cells. Also, instead of getting an 18W charger that is usually offered in this price range, you only get a 10W charger, which will take more time to recharge. Without a doubt, the battery will comfortably last the entire day, that is if you do not use it intensively.

Verdict
We are not sure if we should still call it an entry-level handset or a midrange. To me, It tilts a little more into the lower mid-range in terms of price and specifications, which we know is a very difficult segment to identify regardless. What I know for sure is that when it comes to Gionee phones, it’s pricier than we’re used to. To justify the price, it just has to get more specs like other devices in this price bracket. So, before you decide to buy one, I will advise you to look at Realme V3 or you think a little more.
