Design & Display
There is a new Ceramic Shield glass on the display to make the iPhone 12 4x stronger and Apple claims it is the strongest in the industry. There are strong magnets into the back of the iPhone 12 which allows wireless chargers to be attached (similar to iWatch) and this is intended to make it a little easier and faster to charge wirelessly. Also, other MagSafe accessories like MagSafe case or wallet can also be safely attached to the back of the iPhone.
The sides of the iPhone 12 are flat with a matte finish and have sharper edges that are somewhat similar to the iPhone 5. The front of the device has smaller bezels, although the front-facing camera and Face ID are still housed in the top-notch.
The iPhone 12 comes with a 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR OLED screen with a resolution of 1170 x 2532 pixels, an aspect ratio of 19.5:9 ratio, 460 PPI pixel density, and 1200 nits peak brightness. None of the displays have a 120Hz refresh rate or what Apple would call “ProMotion” technology, even on the Pro variants.
Camera of iPhone 12
The configuration of the rear camera is similar to the iPhone 11. There are two 12 MP rear cameras: one is a wide lens and the other is an ultra-wide lens. The layout of the lenses is the same as that of the iPhone 11, but the lenses are bigger and both have a wider aperture. There is also a 12MP (f/2.2) lens on the front for selfies.
Light mode is on both the wide and ultra-wide lenses. In order to further enhance low-light photography, the main lens has a new 7-element lens and a wider f/1.6 aperture. Apple claims a 27 percent increase in low-light capabilities for better results in a low-light environment.
For more natural-looking images, there’s a Smart HDR 3 that fine-tune elements in a photo by adjusting white balance, contrast, texture, and saturation.
Thanks to the A14 Bionic processor, computational photography is greatly enhanced. On all the lenses, including the selfie lens, Deep Fusion and Night mode work great.
Performance & Battery
A custom Apple Silicon processor that uses the 5nm process is the A14 Bionic. It features a 6-core CPU and a 4-core GPU that is 50% faster than mobile chips from other manufacturers. One thing you should know is that the A14 is the first processor to ever feature a 5nm process. Also, the 16-core processor is up to 80% faster than the A13 Bionic and about 11 trillion operations per second are performed.
The iPhone 12 provides up to 17 hours of video playback, 11 hours of streaming video playback, or 65 hours of audio playback when it comes to battery life.
The latest iPhone 12 offers fast charging, which uses a 20W power adapter to provide a 50 percent charge in 30 minutes.
Apple claims MagSafe charging to be faster than Qi wireless charging and this is due to the fact that MagSafe will use 15W charging while Qi wireless charging limited to 7.5W.
Apple ditched from the iPhone 12 package the power adapter and EarPods, and these products have to be bought separately. By default, all iPhone models now ship with a USB-C to Lightning cable.

The new iPhone 12 is not like a whole new device but rather more like an improvement to the iPhone 11 and it doesn’t really pack a lot of surprises. However, the stronger Ceramic Shield display, improved cameras, and the inclusion of 5G connectivity will definitely lure a lot of consumers to upgrade from iPhone 11 otherwise it is not that worthy.
