Just like the other iPhone 12 models, the iPhone 12 Pro Max comes with a fresh design, smoother A14 Bionic processor, improved cameras, and support for 5G connectivity. It’s a good improvement if you ask me but is the iPhone 12 Pro Max this year worthy? Here’s our review of the complete iPhone 12 Pro Max.
Before we start, it is important to know that Apple highlighted more on the latest iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max models this year, indicating that the more costly iPhones the more you get the most out of their iPhones innovation. Meanwhile, the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max have similar specifications for the most part, but the clear distinction is the camera and display.
iPhone 12 Pro Max price in Nigeria & availability
The iPhone 12 Pro Max official price starts at US$1,099 for 128GB of storage, US$1,199 256GB, and $1,399for 512GB.
The iPhone 12 Pro Max price in Nigeria starts at N699,000 for 128GB, N790,000 for 256GB storage, N830,000 for the 512GB of storage.

Design & Display
Apple has maintained its design pretty consistent over the past few years since the drastic design change came with the iPhone X, however, this is not the case for this years’ iPhone flagships as Apple obviously inspired the design of the iPhone 12 series from iPhone 5. This means that the device gets a cleaner and more modern finish, with flat edges along the side. The back is made of matte glass framed by a band of stainless steel.
The device comes in Four stainless steel finishes, including graphite, silver, gold, and pacific blue. Also, just like the other iPhone 12 models, the iPhone 12 Pro Max has IP68 certification and this means that the iPhone 12 Pro Max is waterproof down to six meters for 30 minutes.
Unlike the rest of the iPhone 12 models, the iPhone 12 Pro Max comes with a HUGE screen of 6.7-inch and it is a Super Retina XDR OLED screen with a resolution of 1284 x 2778 pixels, an aspect ratio of 19.5:9, 458 PPI pixel density, 1200 nits peak brightness, True Tone, Dolby Vision, Haptic Touch, and HDR support. Unfortunately, the display does not have the 120Hz refresh rate we are seeing in most flagship devices.
Furthermore, the screen is covered by a ceramic shield glass which makes the screen, even more, tougher than any smartphone around.
The iPhone 12 Pro Max Camera is made for photographers
The new iPhone 12 Pro Max comes with a 12-megapixel triple-lens camera consisting of:
- a wide-angle lens with 47% larger sensor, 26mm focal length, f/1.6 focal length, dual pixel PDAF, and sensor-shift OIS
- an ultra-wide-angle lens with 13mm focal length, f/2.4 aperture, 120˚ field of view, and Lens Correction to account for distortion
- and a telephoto lens with 65mm focal length, f/2.2 aperture, PDAF, OIS, 4x optical zoom in, 2x optical zoom out, and a 10x digital zoom in.
The wide lens of iPhone 12 Pro Max and iPhone 12 Pro has the same f/1.6 aperture, but the iPhone 12 Pro Max uses a 47 percent larger sensor with larger pixels that allow for even more light. Apple claims low-light photos taken with the iPhone 12 Pro Max are 87 percent better and more detailed.
Also, the iPhone 12 Pro Max wide lens optical image stabilization has been upgraded to a DSLR-style Sensor-Shift which stabilizes only the sensor and allowing it to be steadier. All this is to enable more light to be absorbed for a longer exposure and for the image to remain more clearer on camera shakes or blur from movements.
Apart from that, there is also a LiDAR scanner that allows faster low-light image stabilization, more realistic augmented reality experiences, and also enables portraits in night mode.

More camera features
The Face ID is still operated by the front-facing TrueDepth camera which is a 12MP selfie camera that also supports Smart HDR, Deep Fusion, Night mode, Portrait Mode, and Portrait Lighting effects, 4K video capture at up to 60fps with cinematic video stabilization.
For more natural-looking images, there’s a Smart HDR 3 that fine-tune elements in a photo by adjusting white balance, contrast, texture, and saturation.
Interestingly, the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max will be able to use the new Apple ProRAW photo file format. What this means is that users can shoot RAW picture files while simultaneously using the computational photography features like Deep Fusion and Smart HDR which can then be edited in the native Photos app and other advanced editing applications. These ProRAW photo file formats can also be edited, possibly using Adobe applications.
Video has been enhanced to include 10-bit HDR recording capabilities, and iPhone 12 is the first smartphone to record in Dolby Vision HDR (up to 60fps). The rare cameras can record up to 4 K resolution at 24/30/60ftp and up to 1080p slo-mo at 240fps.
The iPhone 12 Pro Max will not disappoint you if you are really looking for the most powerful smartphone. The A14 Bionic chip is a custom Apple Silicon processor that uses the 5nm process. It features a 6-core CPU and a 4-core GPU that is 50% faster than mobile chips from other manufacturers.
One thing you should know is that the A14 is the first processor to ever feature a 5nm process. Also, the 16-core processor is up to 80% faster than the A13 Bionic and can perform up to 11 trillion operations per second. Furthermore, 5G connectivity is now in effect and supports mmWave 5G in the USA.
The device comes with 6GB RAM and up to 512 GB of internal storage. I highly recommend that you buy with the highest memory if you can afford and save yourself the agony of freeing up space in the future.
Thanks to the A14 Bionic processor, computational photography is greatly enhanced. On all the lenses, including the selfie lens, Deep Fusion, and Night mode work great.
The device provides up to 20 hours of video playback, 11 hours of streaming video playback, or 80 hours of audio playback when it comes to battery life. It supports fast charging, which uses a 20W power adapter to provide a 50 percent charge in 30 minutes.
To all the new iPhones, Apple has introduced a magnet onto the back which aligns a wireless charger from MagSafe to easily charge the device. It is also possible to attach other accessories like wallets from MagSafe.
Apple claims MagSafe charging to be faster than Qi wireless charging and this is due to the fact that MagSafe will use 15W charging while Qi wireless charging limited to 7.5W.
Apple ditched the power adapter and EarPods from all the iPhone 12 models package, and these products have to be bought separately. By default, all iPhone models now ship with a USB-C to Lightning cable.
