The iPhone 13 Pro Max is for users who actually pay attention to specs. The gains over last year’s iPhone 12 Pro Max are substantial but just not immediately apparent when seen from far.
The most significant improvements on the iPhone 13 Pro Max, as with the cheaper iPhone 13 and 13 Mini, are to the design, chip (GPU), battery life, and camera system. The 13 Pro Max adds a third significant upgrade with a high refresh rate screen.
When you get just about everything you could want in a phone, you get the iPhone 13 Pro Max. This high-end flagship (starting at $1,099) features a 120Hz refresh rate display, one of the fastest chips, and an incredible battery life.
The camera bump on the iPhone 13 Pro Max is undoubtedly more noticeable than the 12 Pro Max, thanks to the larger sensors, and the overall design. I appreciate that the notch on the 6.7-inch display is 20% smaller than last year’s iPhone 12 Pro Max. It’s the iPhone 13 Pro Max’s cameras and refresh rate that really set it apart from cheaper iPhone 13 models. You can shoot Cinematic mode videos with a captivating bokeh effect, select your own Photographic styles, and take amazing close-up shots with a new macro mode that takes advantage of the ultra-wide camera.
Last year’s iPhone received a significant design update, with flat edges, 5G, and MagSafe charging. All of that is carried over to this year’s models, with only minor changes to the design. The most noticeable is the notch on the screen. It’s slightly smaller but Apple did nothing with the extra space at the top, so you can’t see your battery percentage unless you pull down the control center.
For the first time, Apple included ProRes recording at 4K 30fps to the pro lineup, in addition to other camera improvements. Complement this with Apple’s Cinematic video mode, and you’ve got professional camera features.

iPhone 13 Pro Max: Display
The iPhone 13 Pro has a 6.7-inch (1284 x 2778 pixels resolution with 458 pixels per inch) Super Retina XDR OLED display with 1,200-nit peak brightness, making it up to 25% brighter outdoors, and a 120Hz refresh rate. The display supports ProMotion technology, HDR10, Dolby Vision as well as True Tone to match the color temperature of the display to the ambient light, Wide Color for rich, vibrant colors, and Haptic Touch for feedback.
This is the very first time we’ve seen an iPhone with a 120 refresh rate. It means that scrolling through your social media feeds or reading articles will be very smooth.
Apple’s proprietary technology adjusts the frame rate ranging from 10Hz to 120Hz based on what you’re viewing on your phone. This is similar to technology seen on previous iPad models, and many Android phones already have it.

iPhone 13 Pro Max: Design
The all-new Pro lineup features a premium flat-edge design with a stainless steel band and a stylish finish that is durable to abrasion, and a textured matte glass back.
The iPhone 13 Pro Max is available in four eye-catching colors Graphite, Gold, Silver, and the all-new sierra blue, which was created by applying multiple layers of nanometric metallic ceramics across the surface for a stunning and long-lasting finish. The Ceramic Shield front cover, which is exclusive to iPhone is tougher than any smartphone glass in the market and it offers protection to the iPhone 13 Pro Max display, providing incredible drop protection.
The display notch that houses the TrueDepth camera system, is now 20% smaller than last year’s iPhones thereby providing a larger viewing area on the display while still incorporating innovative technologies such as Face ID. The rear camera system features a new design with stunning stainless steel trim enclosing each sapphire crystal lens. Just like with the other iPhone 13 models, the 13 Pro Max comes with an industry-leading IP68 water resistance rating and it is built to withstand spills from liquids and a 30-minute submersion in 6 meters of water.
iPhone 13 Pro Max: Camera
The iPhone 13 Pro Max camera system receives its most significant advancement yet, with new Ultra Wide, Wide, and Telephoto cameras that are powered by the unrivaled performance of A15 Bionic. The new triple-camera will allow users to take stunning photos with capabilities that have never been available on an iPhone, such as macro photography on the new Ultra-Wide camera and up to 2.2x enhanced low-light performance on the new Wide camera.
With Cinematic mode, videography on the iPhone 13 Pro Max takes a huge step forward with beautiful depth-of-field transitions, macro video, Time-lapse and Slo-mo, and perhaps an improved low-light performance. The iPhone 13 Pro models also provide end-to-end professional workflows in Dolby Vision and ProRes, which are only available on the iPhone.
The iPhone 13 Pro lineup features the best camera system ever on iPhone, with new sensors and lenses for all three rear cameras, optimized to work perfectly with iOS 15, and the camera is powered by the new image signal processor (ISP) in A15 Bionic for better noise reduction and tone mapping.
The Wide camera has a larger sensor with 1.9µm pixels, for faster shutter speeds required in a variety of lighting conditions, resulting in more detailed photos. When combined with the larger f/1.5 aperture, the Wide camera on the iPhone 13 Pro Max improves low-light performance by up to 2.2x when compared to the iPhone 12 Pro Max. Sensor-shift optical image stabilization (OIS), which is exclusive to the iPhone, is available on both models, stabilizing the sensor rather than the lens to ensure smooth images and stable videos.
The new Ultra-Wide camera has a much wider f/1.8 aperture and a unique autofocus system, resulting in a 92 percent improvement for low-light environments and clearer, crisper images. The new ultra-wide camera, autofocus capability, and advanced software enable something that had never been on the previous iPhones: macro photography. Users can capture sharp, stunning images of objects that appear larger than life by magnifying subjects with a minimum focus distance of 2 centimeters. Macro also includes video, such as Slo-mo and Time-lapse.
The iPhone 13 Pro Max also features a new 77mm Telephoto lens that has a 3x optical zoom range, up from 2.5x in the 12 Pro Max, and with the addition of the Ultra Wide lens, it has a 6x optical zoom range and support for 15x digital zoom. There’s also a LiDAR Scanner, which the iPhone 13 and 13 mini don’t have.
More camera specs
For the very first time, Night mode is available on all cameras on the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max, including the Telephoto camera, and with Smart HDR 4, users will be able to take photos with improved color, skin tone, and lighting for group photos of up to 4 people or in difficult lighting situations, resulting in more realistic looking photos. Also, Deep Fusion, Apple ProRAW, and Portrait mode with Portrait Lighting are also available on the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max.
The cinematic mode adds professional-level cinematography and beautiful depth effect to your videos using Dolby Vision HDR, thanks to A15 Bionic and sophisticated machine learning algorithms. The ability of Cinematic Mode to adaptively shift focus and follow the subject of your video. The focus will shift if the subject moves. When the subject looks away, the focus shifts to where the subject is looking. Simply tap where you want to focus, then tap again to lock it in.
The iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max also include ProRes, an advanced video coding algorithm that is commonly used as the final production format for feature films, commercials, and live streams in order to provide better color accurateness with lossy video compression format.
Users can adjust the level of bokeh in the Photos app and iMovie for iOS, making the iPhone 13 lineup the only device capable of editing the depth-of-field effect in the video even after recording. Both models also support HDR video recording with Dolby Vision — from capture to editing and sharing — with all cameras now supporting 4K up to 60 fps.
When it comes to power, it should come as no surprise that the iPhone 13 (All models) is the most powerful iPhone so far, thanks to Apple’s new A15 Bionic chip. The A15 Bionic chip in the iPhone 13 Pro lineup is even more advanced than the one in the more affordable iPhone 13 and 13 Mini, providing outstanding speed and power while powering the incredible new display, camera, and video features that have never been available on iPhone.
The A15 Bionic is the fastest chip in the smartphone market and it includes a new 5-core GPU in the Pro lineup with 5nm technology, bringing the fastest graphics performance than in any smartphone, up to 50% faster than the leading competition, best for video apps and high-performance gaming.
The new 6-core CPU, which features two new high-performance cores and four new high-efficiency cores makes it up to 50% faster than the competition and handles demanding tasks smoothly. With iOS 15, new 16-core Neural Engine can perform 15.8 trillion operations per second, allowing for even faster machine learning computations for third-party app experiences, as well as unlocking new iOS 15 features like Live Text in Camera that uses on-device intelligence to recognize text in a photo and allows users to take action and a new 3D Maps navigation feature. Furthermore, significant advancements in next-generation ISP provide improved noise reduction and tone mapping.
Apple has made it possible for the iPhone 13 (All models) to have wider 5G coverage and performance thanks to the customized hardware in the iPhone 13 lineup. There’s also a Smart Data mode, which smartly saves battery life by switching to LTE when 5G speeds aren’t required.
Lastly, the iPhone 13 Pro Max has storage capacities of 128GB, 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB.
The iPhone 13 Pro Max has an all-day battery life, lasting up to 2.5hrs longer than the iPhone 12 Pro Max.
In terms of battery life, the iPhone 13 Pro Max is said to be able to last up to 28 hours of video playback. This has largely been accomplished through a variety of optimizations made possible by the A15 chipset and power efficiency improvements from better integration of hardware and software.
We haven’t heard anything about charging upgrades for the iPhone 13 Pro Max, so we’re assuming that all four phones will continue to charge at 20W wired and 15W MagSafe wireless.
