Apple’s approach to developing a more inexpensive iPhone has been to pack superior processors into older model cases since the iPhone 5c. The business has maintained this approach with the third iteration of the iPhone SE 2022. On the outside, the new iPhone SE looks almost identical to the 2020 model, with the same home button, top and bottom bezels, and rounded edges. This year’s model comes with an A15 Bionic chip and a 5G connectivity, promising a significant speed jump. This year’s model, which costs $429, also has a longer battery life and increased durability, according to Apple.

The iPhone SE may be right for you if you want a simple iPhone that performs like new and doesn’t mind the retro look and single rear camera.

Other phone makers aim to mimic as many flagship features as possible on their budget devices, while often cutting back on the chipset. Apple is doing it retroactively; the new iPhone SE looks identical to its two-year-old predecessor and shares many of the same essential features, such as the single 12-megapixel rear camera and 4.7-inch LCD display.

However, the A15 Bionic, Apple’s most powerful mobile chip, is at the heart of the new iPhone SE 2022. Even though it’s somewhat more expensive than the 2020 model, Apple manages to make this otherwise uninteresting phone relevant and a great investment with that single upgrade.

The new iPhone SE — which shares the same moniker as its two predecessors, thus it’s sometimes referred to as iPhone SE 3 or iPhone SE (2022) — is similar to the old iPhone SE in many aspects.

If you’re being generous, you could call the iPhone SE 3’s design classic, even timeless. But, to be honest, the hardware looks obsolete because it is old: those massive bezels enclosing the 4.7-inch display; the single rear camera with a startlingly small lens; and a home button. For the most part, the outside shell is identical to that of the iPhone 8, which was released in 2017. This design cries “old” in 2022, in the age of massive multi-camera setups and enormous displays with tiny bezels.

The LCD panel’s specifications are unimpressive: 750 x 1334 pixels, 60Hz refresh rate, and 625 nits of maximum brightness. However, in real-world use, the screen appears to be in good shape. Even at 60Hz, iOS animations have always felt smooth, and the screen is small enough that the lesser resolution isn’t noticeable. Obviously, if you are the type of person who gets to use the newest, most expensive phone isn’t going to be impressed with this screen, but I assume people who are even considering buying this phone aren’t expecting a 120Hz OLED screen.

The Home Button is still here, and it works flawlessly and quickly with button-based fingerprint sensors over Apple’s Face ID.

The only thing that hasn’t changed that I really care about is the display. The iPhone SE’s tiny LCD display was notably tougher to use in bright sunshine and its black tones weren’t as black as they are on an OLED display.

The iPhone SE 3 2022 is made of glass on both the front and back, and while the display isn’t protected by the Ceramic Shield technology found on the iPhone 12 and 13, Apple claims it has the “toughest glass in a smartphone.”

There are a few other features that haven’t changed but are rarely seen on inexpensive phones. The iPhone SE, like Apple’s recent models, still enables wireless charging and has an IP67 grade for water and dust resistance. Again, the iPhone SE differs significantly from other budget smartphones, which often skimp on these features and the processor in favor of large displays and at least three rear camera modules.

iPhone SE 2022: Camera

The iPhone SE’s cameras remain its worst flaw in the mid-range market. It just has one 12-megapixel sensor with an f/1.8 aperture on the back, but most of its competitors have two or more, giving them more versatile shooting rigs.

The technology in the current iPhone SE’s camera system is similar to that of its predecessor, which is based on the iPhone XR. Although it’s far from cutting-edge, Apple’s photography prowess is largely due to its software and post-processing. And the phone’s A15 Bionic chip helps with that, enabling new photography features like Deep Fusion and Photographic Styles.

Along with the A15 Bionic, Apple also released Smart HDR 4, which features improved noise reduction and more natural tone mapping approaches and algorithms. However, the iPhone SE is not without its flaws. Night Mode is not available on this phone due to its older sensor and lens.

The iPhone SE shoots amazing images in well-lit conditions. It’s difficult to discern the difference between a shot taken with an iPhone SE and one taken with an iPhone 13  unless you blow them up to their full resolution. That’s not to say the iPhone 13 is not superior; it is, but the gap isn’t as large as you might imagine. To be honest, the iPhone SE takes excellent shots, with natural-looking colors and plenty of detail.

When the lighting conditions are poor, the iPhone SE struggles. If your hands are stable, it will still capture decent images, and it will absolutely suffice if you are simply sharing them on phones and social media. However, if you look at the image as its whole, you’ll notice that it’s actually quite grainy and noisy.

The iPhone SE used to be known for its video capabilities. In 2020, just a handful of Android phones in this price range could even record 4K videos, let alone at the quality of the old iPhone SE. The market has evolved, and many Android phones in this price range can now record 4K videos. Nonetheless, the iPhone SE has a little advantage due to its excellent video quality. However, the competition is catching up.

iPhone SE 2022: Performance

Apple’s flagship-class A15 Bionic chip powers the iPhone SE. To summarize, it is constructed using a 5nm process and contains almost 15 billion transistors. It contains four GPU cores and six CPU cores. It also includes a new image signal processor and a 16-core Neural Engine that can perform 15.8 trillion operations per second.

The A15 is unquestionably quicker than the A13 in the second-generation iPhone SE. CPU and GPU performance should improve by 20-30%, though this varies depending on the task. It’s questionable if you’ll notice that level of performance in everyday use.

The A15 also has a better image processor, which means it can do more with the data from the iPhone 8’s outdated sensors and optics; none of the iPhone 8’s camera sensors or optics have been changed since the device was released five years ago. For example, the iPhone SE 2022 has the new Photographic Styles function, as well as outstanding 4K 60Hz video recording, Deep Fusion, and Smart HDR 4, which performs admirably in bright outdoor lighting.

The iPhone SE has an unbeatable performance advantage in this price range thanks to these remarkable stats. The A15 Bionic is a massive mobile processor with near-unrivaled performance. This means that the iPhone SE is one of the most powerful smartphones available.

Despite being Apple’s most cost-effective new iPhone, the iPhone SE comfortably outperformed even the most recent and powerful Android phones. That is, without a doubt, the phone’s most remarkable feature.

Connectivity and battery life

Battery life is one area where compact smartphones like the iPhone SE and iPhone 13 mini fall short. Apple promised that the A15 Bionic will improve the battery life of this year’s iPhone SE, and it delivered. The new iPhone SE lasted about a day in normal use before requiring a charge.

I like that the iPhone SE charges wirelessly in addition to having a Lightning connector. It can also function with mid-band networks and supports sub-6 5G. Apple did not incorporate ultrawideband for more exact AirTag locations, so those looking for it may be disappointed. mmWave 5G is also missing, which is expected given the lack of widely available and reliable coverage.

Should you buy it?

The new iPhone SE is a somewhat poorer deal than the 2020 model, at $429 and without a charger in the box. However, the difference isn’t significant enough to make the deal a bad one. With the new iPhone SE 2022, you get Apple’s latest technology, as well as a few top features not seen on inexpensive phones, such as wireless charging. The remainder of the hardware, on the other hand, is nearly identical, and even the A15 chip can’t get the iPhone SE’s single-camera unit up to the level of quality found on more expensive iPhones.

The whole package is quite comparable to previous iPhone SE versions in terms of durability and power on the cheap, minus the frills.

If you already own the original iPhone SE from 2016, the new iPhone SE is a great upgrade.
You probably don’t need to upgrade if you already have the 2020 iPhone SE. The iPhone SE’s strongest selling point, in my opinion, is that it can easily survive for six years without needing to be upgraded. If you already own the original iPhone SE from 2016, the new iPhone SE is a great upgrade.

The new iPhone SE is a phone that shines in every area where Apple has invested time and effort, but once you reach its limits, they are hard to overcome. The little screen provides true colors and good visibility, but there’s nowhere to go if you start using more complex software that feels cramped. The camera performed admirably, but it lacks capabilities that could assist you in capturing an image in less-than-ideal situations. The battery life is adequate for light use, but as you become more intensive, it will not be able to keep up with you.

However, if you’re confident that you won’t go over these limits, it’s a great option, especially since the A15 chip ensures that you’ll have enough power for every new iOS feature Apple adds in the future. It’s a full-fledged iPhone experience at a lower cost.

We all know Apple does things a little differently, but nowhere is this more evident than in their approach to a budget phone. Although the iPhone SE 2022 is Apple’s most affordable new phone, it is equipped with the same flagship mobile chip as the iPhone 13: the A15 Bionic. It also contains features found on more expensive phones, including an all-metal casing, 5G connection, and a camera system that uses advanced computational photography techniques and records 4K video. Is this, however, enough to compensate for the loss of some features and the outdated appearance?
