LG has unveiled its latest swiveling dual-screen phone from their Explorer project and the device is called LG Wing 5G. LG is not a newcomer to the world of dual-screen smartphones, they have been doing it in recent years but this time around the company has just officially unveiled its boldest move to the world of dual-screen smartphones.
The latest LG Wing has no folding frame like the other dual-screen smartphones we’ve seen recently. Instead, the main screen rotates to a landscape position to show the second smaller screen underneath. Check out all the details below.
The LG wing most interesting feature is of course the swiveling dual screen. The first screen is an OLED display of 6.8 inches with no notches or bezels and can be rotated by 90 degrees in a clockwise manner in order to unveil the second 3.9-inch OLED screen. This allows a single program to be displayed on both screens, or for two different programs to be shown simultaneously on each screen.
You can view apps such as YouTube to Tubi on both screens with the pre-installed Naver Whale browser. Videos would be shown on the main screen while the comments thread or search bar would be displayed on the second screen.
LG also claimed that the swivel mode of the phone would make it much easier to navigate when driving, the first screen would display map navigation while the second screen can be used for calls.
LG claims the phone is sufficiently durable to withstand 200,000 rotations over a five-year period. The phone is 10.92 mm thick, which is quite slimmer to the Galaxy Z Fold 2 when it is folded.
LG Wing Camera
The LG Wing sports a 32 MP(f/1,9) Motorized pop-u camera for selfies. At the back, there is a 64 MP (f/1.8) main camera, a 13 MP (f/1.9) ultra-wide lens and another 12 MP (f/2.2) ultra-wide gimbal lens devoted to the swivel mode only.
The gimbal allows for stable recording. There an on-screen joystick and other functionalities that display on the second smaller screen. LG’s new Hexa motion sensor system enables the Gimbal motion camera to control the camera angle separately of the device by using the joystick. This function comes with a lock to minimize shakes and blurring effects, as well as a follow-up mode to optimize videos while moving. All this makes for a true gimbal-like experience.
Other key tech specs
Initially, I thought the fingerprint scanner would be placed on the power button but I was 100% wrong. The fingerprint scanner is not only placed on the main screen but also on the second screen.
The LG Wing 5G hardware is pretty standard. There’s a Snapdragon 765 G (7nm) processor with an integrated X52 5G Modem. The device has an 8 GB RAM, 256 GB ROM of storage.
The Wing also supports a microSD card slot for up to another 2 TB of storage space. Something you rearely get on flagships.
A 4,000-mAh battery fuels the device. LG claims that the overall performance of the device has been extensively optimized specifically to maximize battery efficiency. The device supports wireless charging.
LG Wing 5G uses the Android 10 operating system. The device uses its displays differently, depending on the applications you use. So, we wouldn’t expect lots of developers to be putting extra efforts just to make their app compatible with how the display functions for the LG wing only.
However, LG claims that all the dual-screen capabilities are open source, and allows third-party developers to use the code to improve their Wing apps if they want.
