Venturing into a competitive budget market is not an easy thing but HMD Global previous budget devices such as the Nokia 5.3 and Nokia 7.2 have been geared at budget and mid-range buyers and the devices were liked by many users. The latest Nokia 5.4 is, of course, the successor to the 5.3 but doesn’t carry many upgrades apart from the camera and punch-hole display. Nevertheless, it is a phone that targets consumers who want a decent phone with all the basics.
The Nokia 5.4 is a superb budget phone and easily succeeds the Nokia 5.3, which was already an impressive budget phone. The camera upgrade and punch-hole display make it even better than the Nokia 5.3, however, these aren’t surprising features in the budget segment anymore.
Based on the popularity of Nokia 5.3, HMD Global has been trying in Nigeria. It really has to do with Nokia’s good reputation.
But is HMD Global willing to compete with the big boys like Infinix, Tecno, Redmi, and Realms? Well, find out the answer yourself in the quick review section.

Quick review

The Nokia 5.4 is packed with a 48MP main camera, an ultra-wide camera of 12MP, a 2MP rear macro and depth sensors, and a 16MP on the front for selfies. In several scenarios, the main camera can take good daylight images, with good detail, and a reasonably wide dynamic range.
The device features a 6.39-inch HD+ punch-hole display with a 720 x 1560 pixels resolution, 269PPI pixel density, and a 19/5:9 aspect ratio. The display is smaller than its predecessor, however, the bezels are a little thinner. This is clearly not a premium-quality screen, but it would be difficult to find a device with an OLED display or 1080pixels resolution at this price range.
The Nokia 5.4 is an outstanding everyday driver if you are someone who is not concerned with spec-sheets. The device packs a Qualcomm Snapdragon 662 (11 nm) processor coupled with 4/6 GB of RAM and 64/128 GB of internal memory which can be expanded with microSDXC.
The 4000mAh battery capacity of the Nokia 5.4 doesn’t seem right in line with what you would expect from a budget phone, however, the device comes with a stock Android software that is really optimized. With moderate usage, the phone will last a full day and you will still be left with enough battery to last half of the next day.
Most budget phones nowadays support fast charging tech and include an 18W charger but that’s not the case here as the device comes with the usual 10W charger.
On the software front, HMD Global has established a decent software standpoint. With Android 10 One Version, the phone gets a clean version of Android that is really optimized. In addition, HMD is known for delivering two-year software upgrades and three-year security updates. So, we are expecting that tradition here.

Verdict
Obviously, there’s nothing groundbreaking here but the device is pretty good for the price. The battery is a little of a let-down, but the 48MP sensor makes up for it I guess.
No phone has ever been meant to be flawless, and there will always be space for improvement. It will be great if the device comes with a faster processor, fast charge tech, and a telephoto camera. But the plain truth is that these budget devices have to also offer budget hardware.
When you compare it with its predecessor, the hardware is still sluggish and not improved well, however, the camera has been improved well. If you are still using the Nokia 5.3, it doesn’t make much sense to upgrade, since it’s the same phone in many aspects.
