Samsung Galaxy S20 FE specs and price in Nigeria

Samsung has decided to add a new device to its Galaxy S series: the Samsung Galaxy S20 FE (Fan Edition). This device provides what Samsung thinks to be the most critical features that Galaxy S fans like and ditching out all other features that are deemed to be less cared for by fans, hence the name. The Samsung S20 FE is cheaper due to the cutting corners that have been done in order to get rid of all the features that are less important. Therefore, the Samsung Galaxy S20 FE price in Nigeria starts from N220,000 (That is for the 4G variant).

Physically, the Samsung Galaxy S20 FE is identical to the standard S20. However, the color choices and finish on the Galaxy S20 FE are considerably different from the S20. The S20 FE offers 6 different colors using a vivid Haze finish with reduced gloss.

In order to deliver an experience in line with the Galaxy S20 series, Samsung has also included all the needed flagship features in the S20 Fan Edition and these are a 120Hz refresh rate, a large AMOLED screen, a rear camera with a triple-lens, a flagship processor, expandable storage, an IP68 rating, wireless charging, and Wireless PowerShare on the smartphone. In addition, the Samsung Galaxy S20 FE comes in two variants: 4 G and 5G.

The price on the S20 FE makes the S20 look a little bit pricey. But one thing you should understand is that N245,000 is not cheap by any measure until you really think long and hard you’ll understand what I’m saying.

Looking at the device from the back, it looks more like a Note 20 than an S20, but there are compromises when you look at the overall design and screen.

Most of the features are from Galaxy S20

A 6.5-inch FHD+ Super AMOLED flat-screen with 2,400 x 1,080 pixels resolution is used in the Galaxy S20 FE, as well as a maximum refresh rate of 120Hz. For the sake of comparison, the screen size of S20 FE is somewhere between the S20, S20+, and S20 Ultra which had 6.2-inch, 6.7-inch, and 6.9-inch screen sizes respectively. Furthermore, the display has HDR10+ certification.

The Galaxy S20 FE has a triple-rear camera setup just like the standard S20. A 12MP (f/1.8) main lens, with Dual Pixel and OIS. The supporting lenses are an ultra-wide-angle 12MP (f/2.2) lens with a 123˚ Field-Of-View and finally an 8MP (f/2.4) telephoto lens with  3x optical zoom and PDAF. These lenses support up to 30x Super-Resolution Zoom.  The 32MP (f/2.0) front camera is embedded within the punch-hole.

The S20 is available in two different chipset varieties (4G and 5G), and these are Exynos 990 (7nm+) and Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 (7 nm+). As per the usual, Samsung Exynos is meant for international release, while Qualcomm Snapdragon is exclusive to the USA. The latter supports 5G connectivity, while the former doesn’t. One thing in common between these chipsets is that they have the same efficiency process of 7nm+.

You have 6 GB of RAM, 128 GB of expandable storage, and a powerful 4500mAh battery with fast charging support (25W via USB-C, 15W via wireless charging, and 4.5W via power share). The phone comes with Android 10 OS with One UI 2.5 as the user interface.

Verdict

It is a tough challenge to create a flagship device while at a short period of time creating another smaller flagship that is similar to the previous just to balance tech innovations and bring down the price that is affordable without making many noticeable compromises. Apart from that, marketing strategies that will bring a lot of sales without competing with the bigger series is also another big task. Putting out a solid phone is no longer enough, you have to deliver it to the world with good price. The Samsung Galaxy S20 FE is a perfect example of a solid flagship with a mouth-watering price tag.

The price of the S20 FE makes the S20 look a little bit pricey. But one thing you should understand is that N220,000 is not cheap by any measure until you really think long and hard you’ll understand what I’m saying.

Looking at the device from the back, it looks more like a Note 20 than an S20, but there are compromises when you look at the overall design and screen.

This is not going to go down as the most exciting Samsung phone of the year, but it should be famous because of the lower cost and good collection of features.

Here Samsung makes compromises in its quality of construction and material used. The S20 FE has a back made of plastic instead of the pricier glass. It has less RAM and storage than the standard S20, and its rear camera setup also has some compromises, but you might not even need them if you ask me. There is no 8 K video recording and 100x hybrid zoom is also absent.

Should you buy it?

Given that the Galaxy S20 FE has similar specs as the more expensive S20 series, and that the price of the standard S20 may eventually drop in a few months, we think it might be a little bit early but if you really need to update from an older Galaxy phone then the price for the Fan edition is good.

If you have an S10, you better hang onto it for a little while for the prices to drop.
