TECNO Mobile has launched a new smartphone to its lineup of budget-friendly options. This time, it’s the gaming-oriented Tecno POVA 2, which comes with various improvements over the initial POVA, including a speedier chipset, improved camera, and a larger battery.
The Tecno POVA 2 smartphone comes with an 18W fast charger, a pair of headphones, a SIM ejector, and a clear silicone cover are all included in the box. There’s also a card for TECNO Mobile’s 12-month plus-one-month warranty.
When the Tecno POVA 2 was unveiled, it caught the attention of a lot of people on social media. The phone’s release in Nigeria popularized the 7000mAh battery in budget handsets. The device, which costs around N70,000 – N80,000, is one of the first to include a large battery as well as other features previously unheard of in this price range.
Tecno Pova 2: Display
From the outside, you will notice a lot of upgrades, beginning with the screen, which is now 6.9 inches in size and has finally been upgraded to full HD+ resolution. That’s an IPS LCD with a resolution of 1080×2460 pixels. The 8MP selfie camera is housed in a dot notch in the device’s upper center.
The bezels are narrow, but the chin is fairly thick. Because of the large display, we enjoyed watching videos on this phablet. It features a wide range of viewing angles. It also comes with a pre-installed screen protector, which is a fantastic addition.
Because it is a budget smartphone, the display panel is not as bright or colorful as its competitors. Even though the contrast levels are weak and the viewing angles aren’t particularly wide, the display is nonetheless usable outdoors in the sun.
A larger screen for Netflix means a larger view, as well as the option to share it with others. Also when it comes to reading, a bigger display allows you to read and work more than on a smaller display. The two criticism to the display is the low pixel density and the screen could have been better if it is brighter. It’s nearly impossible to see clearly when you are using the phone under bright sunshine. Even at max brightness, it is difficult to read.
Button line is: If screen size is important to you, Tecno Pova 2 has one of the largest screens in the budget market.
Tecno Pova 2: Design
The phone’s back is constructed of polycarbonate with a textured matte finish. Micro engraving, as well as vertical lines carved into the shell itself, gives it a banded appearance. Although we are acquainted with this form of the casing, it nevertheless looks surprisingly new to us.
Matte backs are our personal favorite because they are not only scratch and fingerprint-proof, but they also feel wonderful in the hands and do not slip right off flat surfaces. With Matte finish, you may not require a jelly case, but it’s nice that TECNO provided one with the bundle.
Apart from a minor camera bump for the quad-camera system, the entire back looks sleek and tidy. So take our word for it when we say we adore this rear design and want to see more of this in the future.
The rear-mounted fingerprint scanner, which has now been relocated to the power button, is a welcome development. This is yet another good design change since you’ll be pressing the power button to turn the phone on, it’s only natural to put it there.
We’re happy that the TENO POVA 2 now has a USB Type-C. The 3.5mm audio jack and the microphone are located on either side of the port.
Like with most phones, the loudspeakers are located next to the USB port, but that’s not the case with POVA 2. Instead, it is located on top. Because there isn’t much space up there, the sound from the loudspeaker sounds narrow and faint.
Before we go any further, the SIM tray features three slots: two for Nano-SIM cards and one for a microSDXC expansion card.
It’s notable to see that flagships are removing the 3.5mm audio port and expansion card slot, while cheap smartphones are able to retain all of these features and more.

Tecno Pova 2: Camera
On the rear of the Tecno Pova 2, there is a 48MP primary camera with an f/1.9 aperture. There are three more 2MP back cameras featured.
The photos we took are of exceptional quality. There are several shooting modes to pick from, and you may try them out to find which one is best suited for you. The saturation level is acceptable, but the AI mode’s default contrast and brightness values are a bit blown out. It is something that Tecno might want to improve in future software updates.
Macro mode absolutely works and is completely genuine, unlike some other brands that simply call it “macro” for promotional purposes. Slow-motion videos with a frame rate of up to 240 frames per second can be displayed. You can also record videos at a resolution of up to 2K.
If you wish to switch from automatic to AI mode, you’ll be surprised to learn that the default camera app for both photos and videos lacks a manual mode. This means that if you want to shoot images or videos with manual settings, you’ll have to download a different camera app from the Google PlayStore.
This phone has an 8MP front-facing camera with an f/2.0 aperture, which is great for selfies. Despite the lack of native ultrawide or wide selfies, the quality of selfies is remarkable. Thankfully, Tecno’s camera software has an ultrawide selfie mode that works similarly to capturing a panorama photo.
Performance & battery
The 12nm MediaTek Helio G85 SoC in the TECNO POVA 2 is paired with 4/6GB of RAM and 64/128GB of expandable storage. This, together with the 180Hz touch sampling rate, results in a pleasant gaming experience.
There are no lag or frame problems when playing PUBG at high settings. It’s better to lower the settings and frame rates when playing graphics-intensive games like Asphalt 9.
As expected, the chipset-RAM combination is excellent for multitasking and gaming.
The large 7,000mAh battery is ideal for users who enjoy playing multiple games or binge-watching on their gadgets. The 18W fast charger takes just two hours to charge the phone from 0 to 100 percent. A fast-lightening charger would have been preferable, but the provided charger is enough for this price range.
HiOS 7.8 (based on Android 11) is a clean operating system with a small amount of bloatware. It also comes with Game Space 2.0, which is useful for gamers who wish to keep their on-screen shortcuts accessible.
By the way, the TECNO POVA 2 has its own game augmentation program called “Game Space” that allows you to improve your gaming performance, block off distractions like calls and notifications, track game time, and more.
The Game Assistant Panel, which you may access by swiping and holding from the side while in-game, is the best element of Game Space. This allows you to do things like open floating windows for chat apps and map the volume up and down buttons to in-game controls without leaving the game.
Furthermore, the game’s voice may be changed using a variety of pre-set sound templates, allowing you to easily switch between different voices for more unique gaming effects.
Build LAN gaming platforms for playing against opponents in designated rooms; build arcade game emulators for playing arcade games on mobile phones, and provide access to LAN-ready game resources.

Tecno Pova 2 price in Nigeria and availability
The Tecno Pova 2 is already available for sale in Tecno’s stores and retail stores across Nigeria. Its price ranges from N70,000 to N80,000.
Should you buy it?
If having a large display and a long battery life are your main priorities, the TECNO POVA 2 is something worth considering at N70,000.
The Nigerian smartphone market is fiercely competitive, and TECNO is making a positive step forward by providing us with something we want.
The TECNO POVA 2 is without a doubt one of the most appealing phones in the budget segment. It has a sleek design, a large display with sharp 1080p quality, the largest battery capacity at this price point, a good primary camera, and an upgraded and sleeker user interface, all for ~N70,000.
Of course, there are some flaws particularly the camera’s performance which is a little shaky, but with a little illumination, you may achieve good results. The extra depth sensor is also a little strange — the phone has a quad-camera setup, but you can only use two lenses to capture images.
It may not have the best chip under N70k, and there is no ultra-wide lens, but TECNO makes up for it with its long-lasting battery life and large display. Furthermore, the Helio G85 chipset is still above average in terms of performance in its class.
If you require a phone with a large display, an average processor, and a long battery life, the answer is yes.
TECNO is gearing up for a strong push in the Nigerian market in 2021, and the TECNO POVA 2 demonstrates that they have a firm grasp on the budget segment. Big screens and batteries are the features that most people are after particularly in the budget segment and the POVA 2 delivers with its massive 6.9-inch display and 7,000 mAh battery.
It also provides high value in other areas: despite its extra size, its sleek design makes it something we want to use every day. Performance is also better than we would anticipate from an Helio G85 smartphone, and we must commend TECNO for polishing up and improving the user experience.
