Tecno has indeed been highly active in launching new smartphones in the recent four months. In fact, Tecno has released the Tecno Spark 7P, a new entry-level smartphone that is the successor to the Tecno Spark 6 from last year. At just N60,000, the Tecno Spark 7P comes with triple sensors, a 5,000 mAh battery, a 6.8-inch display, and a build with an attractive design.
Although Xiaomi and Redmi are the market leaders in the budget smartphone category, Tecno also has some interesting choices. The Tecno Spark 7, Spark 7P, and Spark 7 Pro are the latest smartphones from the company. When seen from the outside, the Spark 7P appears to be a little step above the standard Spark 7. Is it a worthy contender? In this short review, you’ll find out.
In recent years, Nigerhas emerged as a favored market for budget phone makers. When it comes to purchasing a new phone, there are several choices to consider. And it is Chinese companies that have a foothold for their low-cost phones. Tecno is however one brand that has mainly focused on low-cost smartphones. Here’s our take on the Tecno Spark 7P.
Design of Tecno Spark 7P
At first glimpse, the Spark 7P appears to be a quite large smartphone. Despite having a similarly huge 5000mAh capacity, It is thinner than the competition.
The Spark 7P is made entirely of plastic, with a glossy finish on the body. The phone features a beautiful design that is smooth and doesn’t pick stains or fingerprint easily.
Still, on the design, the phone has a camera module on the back that looks very similar to those we’ve seen in Samsung and Oppo phones. Three sensors and a led light are housed in the rectangular camera module. The company name is largely plastered right below the camera module. There is a square-shaped fingerprint scanner that sits near the camera module. The location of the fingerprint scanner is nothing new; Tecno simply sticks to its true design.
Let’s face it when a brand spends more money on higher specs for an entry device, the design and build quality are usually not impressive. We’ve seen phones with good specs but poor build quality in the past. The Tecno Spark 7Pis fortunately not one of the worst.
The device features a massive 6.8-inch IPS display with 720 pixels HD+ quality, a 90Hz refresh rate, and a 20.5:9 aspect ratio. Although the HD+ quality is unimpressive, however, the aspect ratio makes it excellent for watching movies.
What’s nice is that Tecno went with a dot-hole display for the 8-megapixel selfie camera, keeping it contemporary with design trends. Furthermore, the Spark 7P’s colors are vibrant, and legibility is excellent even in direct sunshine.
The display is good. The colors and viewing angles are excellent, but this is a huge screen, even by today’s standards. Regardless of the size of your palms, you’ll need two hands to use this device comfortably.
The huge screen, on the other hand, makes this a terrific phone for watching videos. The front camera is also housed in a dot cutout. Instead of a punch hole which is mostly being placed on the upper left, the dot cutout is at the center, which I think is no more a trend for budget devices. Plus a punch hole reduces the cutout’s distraction to a bare minimum. In terms of display, the phone delivers admirably.

The camera of Tecno Spark 7P
The Tecno Spark 7P has a triple-camera setup at the back and it consists of a 16MP main camera and two other unknown lenses. Just like the previous Tecno Spark series, You’ll also get access to a number of modes, including slow-motion, AI Camera, Super Night Mode, short video, beauty, AR shot, Night Portrait, Panorama, all of which help you take a good picture. The back camera performs admirably, with bright, detailed images were captured. The images shot in low light, on the other hand, are poor. Furthermore, the phone supports video formats of 480p, 720p, and 1080p.
Meanwhile, The phone’s selfie camera is an 8 MP lens with features such as 3D face beauty, portrait, AI camera, AR shot, wide selfie, short video mode, and HI HDR. The camera’s quality appears to be good, and the colors are bright. But, once again, the front camera was unable to capture clear images in low light, and its performance is only average in such conditions.
To be honest, the lack of an ultra-wide lens isn’t a problem. However, boasting three cameras on the back and then failing to include something that is now practically a regular feature in this price range is a letdown. If you’re looking for a phone in the N60,000 to N70,000 price range with a more powerful camera, the absence of an ultra-wide sensor here could be a deal-breaker.

Software & UI
The Tecno Spark 7P is powered by Android 10 with an HiOS 7.8 customized Android interface on board. Additional functionality and bloatware or unnecessary applications have been added to the UI.
Fast access to apps, gesture navigation, Dark theme, and some pre-installed apps, and more are included in the bloatware of which I personally don’t like.
You can uninstall the pre-installed apps if you don’t like them; however, certain apps cannot be uninstalled. When you do multitasking or add more software, the performance is decent at first, but not so much later. And one important thing, ads, ads, ads, more ads will annoy you if you are not used to it.
Performance & Battery
The MediaTek Helio G70 (12nm) processor powers the Tecno Spark 7P. This isn’t the best processor in this pricing range right now, but it’s not far behind. It has 4GB of RAM and 64GB or 128GB of internal storage that is expansible. This processor basically corresponds to an acceptable level of performance for the moderate user. Heavier android apps, on the other hand, may cause the phone to slow down. Before the phone starts refreshing apps in the minimized window, you may safely run 10-15 moderate to heavy apps at a time. In comparison to other phones in this class, the Spark 7P isn’t the fastest, but it’s also not the worst. As a result, we’ll grade it as an average daily performer.
The battery of the Spark 7P is 5,000mAh which is good but the downside here is that it doesn’t support fast charging. So you have to be patients when charging it. The device can easily last you a day or two depending on your usage. And one more thing, it has a micro USB port instead of a Type-C USB port which would have been better. Overall, the smartphone’s battery life will not disappoint you but juicing it will definitely annoy you especially if you are the type that is often in haste and wants to get some juice in a short period of time.

Tecno Spark 7P price in Nigeria & availability
The Tecno Spark 7P is already available for sale in Tecno’s stores across Nigeria. It is priced at N60,000.
The Tecno Spark 7P is a worthy successor to the Tecno Spark 6. The phone, on the other hand, does not distinguish out in the price group in any way. It has a good mix of performance, camera, display, and battery life, but it isn’t the greatest in any of the N60,000 to N70,000 price ranges. You can find phones that are just as good for less money, or you may spend a bit more and obtain smartphones with more power, faster charging, and other features. Overall, this is a good product, though it is overshadowed by other alternatives like Realme Narzo 30A (If you are after fast charging), Xiaomi Redmi 9 Prime, and Motorola Moto E7 Plus.
Should you buy it?
The Spark 7P boasts a large, tall display that contributes to a pleasant cinematic experience. Sadly, the phone’s other characteristics do not match up. For the same or less money, phones like the Motorola Moto E7 Plus or the Realme Narzo 30A come with more advanced chipsets, higher-resolution displays, and support fast charging. The Spark 7P’s quality will attract some attention, but it will not be a good bang for the buck device in the end.
