Regarding “good budget smartphones,” Tecno isn’t exactly the first company that comes to mind, but every time we reviewed a Tecno device, we were pleasantly impressed. So, I had high hopes for the Tecno Spark 9T when it was announced. Was it a surprise or a letdown? Let’s investigate that in today’s review.

Design & Display

Beginning with the layout. The Tecno Spark 9T has a relatively uncomplicated appearance. The back has a glossy finish, and the edges are squared off.

That camera cutout that has a virtual extension to close the right-side gap intrigues me. Whatever. I have no idea why Tecno did this.

Even though it appears that there are three cameras, only two of them can be utilized to take images. One of them is a “Q”-branded camera from Tecno. What it does is a mystery to me.

In any case, the 13MP primary camera produces good-looking images. By the way, the nighttime image is stunning.

One of the primary selling aspects of this phone is its screen. It has a 6.6-inch LCD screen with a 720 x 1600pixel resolution. Actually, the screen is quite attractive.

Since the maximum brightness may exceed 500 nits, it can definitely be used outside. Might have trouble in the sun, so use your other hand to maybe make some shade.

Additionally, the highest refresh rate of this panel is 90Hz. Personally, I don’t think this is a big plus because most games still have 60 frames per second maximum cap, and refresh rates don’t always equate to smoother animations.

Here is where we will discuss the performance. This phone has 4GB RAM and 64/128GB storage with a MediaTek Helio G37 processor. We have evaluated the G37 chipset’s performance before, and I have to admit that it does not perform admirably in titles like PUBG, COD, and Free Fire. That’s not good for heavy game users because the phone warms up.

This phone has a respectable battery life as well; on the PCMark battery life test at 100 nits of brightness, the 5,000mAh battery can last for around 13 hours.

It has a 10W charger that charges the phone from 15% to 100% in roughly 1:30 minutes, according to the charging speed. For a 10W charger, it’s undoubtedly not that quick, but the charging curve is fascinating because it lacks the distinct tiering that we’ve seen in many other phones.

And this is when the software component turns a little bit… amusing? Do I need to say that? As you can see, the Tecno Spark 9T ships with Android 12 and Tecno’s exclusive HiOS skin.

The UI overall functions fairly well, with the exception of some odd terminology used to describe some of its features, such as “inadvertently mode,” which is simply an accidental unlock avoidance mechanism. Software updates and the system navigation style are among the settings that have been placed at the top of the menu for convenience.

The best camera user interface I’ve ever seen. Tecno gives us the option to swipe up to get the full list of available modes rather than left or right to choose between them. I adore this so much.
